Software Engineer II

Lloyds Banking Group

We're part of an ever-changing industry and are currently on a journey to shape the financial services of the future, whilst supporting our customers’ changing needs. Our purpose is Helping Britain Prosper. We do this by creating a more sustainable and inclusive future for people and businesses, shaping finance as a force for good. My work is a mixture of coding and software architecture-related tasks.

I love how variable my day is. I get to work on so many different parts of the platform, from the web development side of things to databases to data streaming! I'm never bored and the biggest thing it has taught me is that even extremely complicated seeming things can be broken down to be understandable

A typical day for me begins with a daily "standup" meeting in which the team share what they have done in the past day/we collaborate in solving any problems we have faced. I then focus on any "tickets" or tasks I have been assigned for the week and do some solo-work. Most days I don't have many formal meetings scheduled but I drop in and out of impromptu meetings covering demos of other people's work, group-coding sessions or general catch-ups!

I took Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry at A-Level and then proceeded to do a degree in Electrical and Information Sciences, with a focus on Data Science, at the University of Cambridge! After completing an Introduction to Python course in my first year of University I decided to do Software Engineering internships in my second and third years of University which built my interest further! Post-graduating I knew I wanted to apply for a Software Engineering role and in particular something data related - this role seemed like a really good fit for me

In the future I hope to expand my Data Engineering and Data Science skillset so I can tackle even more exciting/difficult projects, and alongside this to travel the world and work in many different countries!

I am an avid reader/film buff, so my favourite places include the cinema and the library. I am currently re-reading 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. I highly recommend it, as it's one of my favourite books! I would also say my favourite show I've watched recently has to be 'The Queen's Gambit'.
